EMDR

GO CONFIDENTLY INTO THE DIRECTION OF YOUR DREAMS! LIVE THE LIFE YOU ALWAYS IMAGINED.    THOREAU

EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro, PhD, in the 1980s and stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It rests on the premises that most psychological problems are based on early life experiences and that our present perception is really a reflection of earlier memories, consciously or unconsciously. On a continuum, any traumatic experience from the past or present has the capacity to color a person's perception of life, to create emotional disturbances to current situations, and to form negative self-concepts and behaviors. Through bi-lateral stimulation and a structured therapeutic protocol, EMDR is an effective treatment modality to rapidly process residue from the past and to transform it into something useful in the present. By processing and adaptively integrating those old memories, we access the natural tendency of body and mind to heal itself, and clients can tap into their own healing potential. Exceeding the benefits of traditional talk-therapy, EMDR has produced positive treatment outcomes with a wide range of symptoms and problems, such as anxiety and phobias, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual abuse, crime, and combat. Well established and empirically validated research supports its effectiveness with PTSD and in the treatment of trauma.

EMDR is recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as an effective treatment for ameliorating symptoms of both acute and chronic PTSD.
APA Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

EMDR is also recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense.
